In short
The Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan is a state academy of fine arts whose history begins in 1776, when Empress Maria Theresa of Austria decided to organise the teaching of the fine arts in the Palazzo di Brera. It awards first- and second-level academic diplomas: three-year courses in painting, sculpture, decoration, printmaking, set design, new art technologies and art communication, and two-year master's-level courses that include fashion design, costume for the performing arts, product design, photography and cinema; it also runs a five-year course in restoration. Besides the Palazzo di Brera, it teaches at other Milan-area sites, among them a school of sculpture and a restoration school in Arcore.
