In short

The Monozukuri Design (craft and design) major of the Akita University of Art, a public university of art in Akita, was set up to bring craft and design back together. Using the university's craft studios, students learn the techniques of woodwork, lacquer, metal chasing, ceramics, dyeing and glass, as well as product design, choosing two fields in the third year and making work drawn from local industries and culture in the fourth. The university opened in 2013; its history traces back to the Akita Municipal Craft School founded in 1952.
