In short
Artesania Sorata began in 1978 and grew from an extended family into a co-operative of villagers and rural artisans, and then into a business that gives work to more than 150 indigenous families in La Paz, El Alto and Sorata. Its artisans, mostly women, make alpaca knitwear and handcrafts in handspun sheep's wool entirely by hand, with yarns hand-dyed using natural dyes (except the blues). The organisation states that its aim is to retrieve textile traditions, and that it has taught adult literacy, health care and creative skills to its artisans; it is part of the US non-profit Campo Nuevo.
