The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) was established in 2005 through the merger of Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon, whose roots go back to the early 20th century. Its Faculty of Informatics and Design includes a Department of Applied Design offering Fashion Design, Jewellery Design and Manufacture, Product and Industrial Design and Visual Communication Design. The jewellery course teaches students to design and make jewellery by hand and with digital technologies, while the fashion diploma covers design, technology, management and clothing theory. The faculty is based on the District Six and Roeland Street campuses in Cape Town.
