The Central Footwear Training Institute in Guindy, Chennai, came into existence in July 1957 with assistance from the Ford Foundation and is now an autonomous institution under India's Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises; it was later modernised with UNDP support. It offers an advanced diploma in footwear manufacture and design and courses in footwear technology, footwear design and product development, sports shoe manufacturing and shoe upper clicking, along with 2D and 3D CAD courses for shoes and leather goods.
