The Chartered Institute of Brewers and Distillers (CIBD), an educational charity registered in London, offers professional qualifications in brewing, distilling, malting, cider making and packaging, from Foundation and General Certificates to Diplomas, as well as on-demand short courses on subjects such as gin, whisky production and sensory analysis. Study is through online, self-directed learning material followed by an exam, with tutor-guided learning available for the Diplomas. The institute traces its origins to the Laboratory Club, formed in 1886, which later became the Institute of Brewing.
