In short
The Court of Master Sommeliers is a London-based examining and teaching body for sommeliers, set up to encourage high standards of beverage service in hotels and restaurants. The first Master Sommelier examination was held in London in 1969, and the Court was formed in 1977. It offers four levels: the Introductory Sommelier Certificate (a two-day course followed by an exam), the Certified Sommelier Certificate, the Advanced Sommelier Certificate (course and exam) and the Master Sommelier Diploma. Courses are held in Europe, Oceania, Asia and the Americas; the Americas have their own organisation and website.
