In short
ECAL, the University of Art and Design Lausanne, traces its origins to the cantonal drawing school officially opened by the Canton of Vaud in 1821; it took its current name in 1986 and since 2007 has occupied a former factory in Renens. It offers Bachelor's degrees in fine arts, cinema, graphic design, industrial design, media and interaction design and photography, as well as Master's programmes including Product Design. Its Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship is a one-year programme in which students work with luxury brands on objects in fields such as fine watchmaking and tableware, with introductory courses in fine watchmaking and art mechanics.
