The Fashion Institute of Technology is a public college of the State University of New York for design, fashion, art, communications and business, on Seventh Avenue at 27th Street in Manhattan. It was founded in 1944 by educators and leaders of New York's garment centre to train workers for the apparel industry. Its programmes include Fashion Design (AAS and BFA); Footwear and Accessories Design (AAS and BFA), where students make footwear, handbags and small leather goods from concept to finished product; and a two-year Jewelry Design AAS covering design, fabrication, gemology and manufacturing, with metal-arts studios and a gem collection.
