The Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art of Coast Mountain College in Terrace, British Columbia, was created to honour and continue the legacy of the Haida master carver and painter Freda Diesing, and teaches traditional First Nations Pacific Northwest Coast art. Its First Nations Fine Arts programme starts with a certificate in two-dimensional Northwest Coast design, drawing and painting, continues with a diploma in which students build and use traditional tools and learn carving techniques, and goes on to an advanced level in jewellery and sculpture under the mentorship of master artists. Visiting artists and cultural advocates also contribute to the teaching.
