In short
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a public-benefit, nonprofit institute established in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley, which began with a gemology correspondence course; it carries out gem research, grading and education. Its programmes cover gemology (diamonds, coloured stones and pearls) and jewellery arts, including jewellery fabrication and repair (casting, setting, polishing), jewellery design and CAD/CAM, delivered online and in instructor-led lab classes. Its headquarters campus is in Carlsbad, California, and it has campuses in gem and jewellery centres around the world, among them New York, where it offers a Graduate Jeweler programme, London, Mumbai and Bangkok.
