In short
Hand & Lock is a London embroidery house at 86 Margaret Street that works for fashion houses, designers, interior decorators, the Royal Family and costume designers, and holds a Royal Warrant as embroiderers and suppliers of military accoutrements. Its history goes back to 1767, when M. Hand began selling lace to military tailors in London; M. Hand & Co merged with the embroidery house S. Lock Ltd in 2001. Through the Hand & Lock School it runs in-person and online embroidery courses, taster and short courses and guest tutor workshops, and in 2024 it launched an Embroidery Diploma. It also organises the annual Hand & Lock Prize for embroidery.
