In short
Interior and Surface Design is the design department of the HTL Spengergasse in Vienna's 5th district, offered as a higher-level course and as a Kolleg for students with the Matura. Building on the school's long tradition in textile design, it teaches the patterning and design of textile and other surfaces (surface design) and the development and visualisation of interior concepts, from free artistic work to computer-aided design; admission requires an aptitude test. According to the school, it was founded on 11 January 1758 by Empress Maria Theresa as the «k.k. Commerzialzeichnungsakademie» to train specialists for the textile industry, and from 1881 it was called the «Lehranstalt für Textilindustrie»; today it also teaches computer science and other technical subjects.
