The Department of Design of the Iceland University of the Arts in Reykjavík offers BA programmes in fashion design, graphic design and product design, and an international MA in design. In fashion design students train in pattern making, garment sewing, drawing and a range of textile techniques alongside design research; in product design they work with ceramics, wood and metal to give form to ideas, and develop products from under-used Icelandic raw materials together with local manufacturers. The university describes itself as an independent arts university since 1999.
