In short
The Ishikawa Prefectural Wajima Institute of Lacquer Arts in Wajima trains successors to the techniques of holders of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasures) in lacquer, and is run by Ishikawa Prefecture with support from the Agency for Cultural Affairs. A three-year regular course teaches kiji (wooden bases), kyūshitsu (lacquer coating), maki-e and chinkin, and a two-year special course teaches basic skills to beginners; examination, enrolment, tuition and materials are free. It opened in 1967 as a Wajima municipal institute and passed to the prefecture in 1972; after heavy damage from the 2024 earthquake and floods, it held its first spring entrance ceremony in three years in April 2026.
