In short
The Ishikawa Prefectural Yamanaka Lacquerware Industrial Technology Center, in Yamanaka Onsen in the city of Kaga, opened in April 1997 to pass on the wood-turning (hikimono rokuro) technique at the root of Yamanaka lacquerware and to train future workers for the lacquer industry. Its Ishikawa Wood-Turning Training Institute runs a two-year basic course and a two-year advanced course: lathe woodcraft, making the cutting tools, wiped-lacquer finishing, basic lacquer art and maki-e, drawing and design, and craft history. The centre states that it is the only training facility in Japan specialised in both wood-turning and lacquer art; its director is a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property title for woodcraft.
