The Kunstschule Wien is a private art school with public status, run by the Verein Wiener Kunstschule, offering a six-semester course in fine art that ends with a diploma examination and requires no school-leaving certificate, only a completed compulsory education and an aptitude interview. After an orientation year, students choose two of its workshops, which include ceramics, sculpture, design and space, printmaking, painting, graphic design, animation and comics; the ceramics workshop works with clays, porcelain and plaster on industrial product design, functional ceramics and sculptural work. The school traces its origins to a preparatory school opened in 1947 at the Academy of Fine Arts, from which the Wiener Kunstschule emerged in 1954; it teaches at sites on Lazarettgasse in the 9th district and in the 16th district.
