In short
Kyoto City University of Arts is a public university of fine arts and music in Kyoto whose history goes back to the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting founded in 1880; it took its present form in 1969 and moved to a new campus in Shimogyo ward in 2023. In the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Crafts department has three majors, ceramics, lacquer and dyeing and weaving: students try all three in the first year and specialise from the second. The ceramics major teaches plaster-mould forming and wheel-throwing for porcelain, tableware and material studies and independent work, and uses pieces of Kyō-yaki in the university's art collection as teaching material.
