In short
The Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture, a public research institute in the Kyoto Research Park, runs training courses to prepare successors for Kyoto's traditional industries. Courses cover ceramics (a one-year programme of glazes, underglaze and overglaze painting, plaster moulds, wheel-throwing and slip casting, raku and firing), glazes, lacquer, hand-painted Kyō-yūzen dyeing at several levels, Nishijin weaving on power looms with jacquard, and basic dyeing. The institute states that about 100 people complete the courses each year, and that its ceramics training began in 1899 as the apprentice system of the Kyoto Municipal Ceramics Testing Institute; it also helps graduates develop products and find markets.
