In short
The Nara Traditional Crafts Successor Training is a three-year programme of the city of Nara for future successors of Nara crafts; its eighth intake, for April 2026 to March 2029, offered one place in Nara ittōbori wood carving and one in Nara-zarashi hemp cloth. Trainees, under 40 and with basic skills in the craft, are taught by workshop masters and train and give demonstrations at Nara Kogeikan for at least 20 days a month, alongside a programme on running a business and finding sales outlets. The training is free apart from materials, the city pays trainees a monthly stipend, and continuation is reviewed every year.
