The Department of Industrial Design of National United University in Miaoli began in 1987 as an industrial design section majoring in footwear design at the former United Junior College of Technology; it took its present name when the school became a university in 2003, and also runs a graduate institute. Its teaching has broadened from shoe design to product, metalwork, shoe pattern, transportation, interface and socio-cultural design, including lifestyle and cultural product design. The department lists research on footwear, leather accessories and bags, and precious-metal jewellery, and has a shoe pattern-making studio, a metalwork studio, a transportation design studio and a 3D manufacturing and VR lab.
