Nelson Mandela University – Department of Visual Arts, School of Visual and Performing Arts, Faculty of Humanities (Bachelor of Visual Arts in Fashion and Textile Design)
In short
The Department of Visual Arts of Nelson Mandela University, part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts, traces its origins to the Port Elizabeth Art School, founded in 1882. Its Fashion and Textile Design stream of the Bachelor of Visual Arts is taught in a dedicated building on the 2nd Avenue campus and combines textile and fashion design in one programme: students design and print their own textiles and make garments or interior products from them. Teaching covers pattern adaptation and garment assembly, knitwear, crochet, weaving and embroidery, with on-site sewing and knitting facilities and LECTRA CAD/CAM software, and final ranges are shown at the annual Graduate Fashion Show or in an exhibition.
