The School of Commercial Industrial Art and Design (SCIAD) of Nkumba University, a private not-for-profit university near Entebbe, was established in 1994; the school traces its origins to the idea of teaching commercial arts in Uganda conceived by Ellie Banyikidde Ssemanda in 1979. It offers programmes from certificate to PhD level, with specialisations in fashion, commercial art, graphic communication design and interior design, including a Bachelor of Fashion and Textiles Design and a Diploma in Vocational Arts/Crafts and Design Studies. Its teaching staff include practising fashion designers and specialists in fabric design, fashion accessory design and ceramics.
