In short
The New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI), at Te Puia in Rotorua, has trained students in traditional Māori arts since its 1963 Act. It comprises three national schools: Te Wānanga Whakairo Rākau (wood carving), Te Takapū o Rotowhio (stone and bone carving) and Te Rito o Rotowhio (weaving). The wood carving course lasts three years, full time, and takes up to five students a year, who must be male, of Māori descent and over 18; the weaving programmes, open to men and women over 18, last two years. The institute can confer its own qualifications, and visitors can watch students and master carvers at work.
