The Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Industry is a state university of applied arts and design. It was founded on 9 January 1876 as the Central School of Technical Drawing, funded by the banker and industrialist Alexander von Stieglitz, and was re-established in 1945 as a centre for training restorers. Today its faculties of design, monumental and decorative art, and fine art and restoration include departments of artistic metalwork, art ceramics and glass, art textiles, costume design, furniture design, interior design, monumental sculpture and painting, and painting and restoration. It also offers continuing education, professional retraining and courses for children and adults.
