In short
Savon ammattiopisto (Sakky) is a vocational college with campuses in Kuopio and Varkaus; at the Varkaus campus it teaches the precious-metal branch of the vocational qualification in crafts and design, whose title is artisan. Over two to three years students learn to design and make jewellery from precious metals, gemstones, enamel, glass and recycled materials, with goldsmithing techniques, raising and casting, gem cutting, stone setting, enamelling and lampwork glass beads. They take on customer work, practise entrepreneurship at fairs and events, and the qualification can also be taken through an apprenticeship.
