In short
The Berufsfachschule für Holzschnitzerei und Schreinerei in Berchtesgaden, known locally as the Schnitzschule, is run by the district of Berchtesgadener Land and offers two free three-year training courses, wood sculptor/carver and cabinetmaker/joiner, both taught in theory and practice at the school and ending with the journeyman's certificate. Wood carvers develop and carry out their own artistic designs, and cabinetmakers make contemporary furniture from their own designs, combining traditional woodworking with modern machinery. Founded in 1840 as a drawing school and continued from 1858 as a carving school by the sculptor Michael Hohm, it added a cabinetmaking department in 1906.
