The Schule für Holzbildhauerei in Brienz, known as the «Schnätzi», is a training workshop for wood sculpture and the vocational school for six craft wood trades. Apprentices in its workshop train as wood sculptors (Holzbildhauer/in EFZ) and carry out commissions for customers; the vocational school is, according to the school, the only one in Switzerland for wood sculpture, woodcraft (wood turning and Weissküferei, the making of traditional dairy vessels), basket and wickerwork design, and cooperage, with four two-week teaching blocks a year. The school was founded in 1884 as the «Schnitzlerschule Brienz» and has been a school and training workshop of the Canton of Bern since 1928; it also keeps a collection of models and drawings for teaching.
