In short
The Shigaraki Ceramic Research Institute, a public testing station of Shiga Prefecture in Shigaraki (city of Kōka), runs a one-year training programme for ceramic technicians that began in 1973 to train successors for Shigaraki and the prefecture's other pottery centres. It offers four courses: large-piece wheel-throwing, a Shigaraki technique for forming large ware on the electric wheel; small-piece wheel-throwing; clay bodies and glazes; and design, covering mould forming, slip casting and screen-printed decoration. The institute states that more than 600 trainees have completed the programme.
