The state vocational school for wickerwork design in Lichtenfels, which describes itself as the only one of its kind in Germany, trains students over three years of full-time study as state-certified wickerwork designers; the final examination is equivalent to the journeyman's examination. Practical teaching centres on weaving techniques for baskets, furniture and objects made to brief and to the students' own designs, alongside technical drawing, design, model making, CAD and basic wood and metalworking. The school opened on 1 May 1904 as the Royal School of Basket Weaving; no tuition fees are charged.
