In short

The Steinmetzschule Aschaffenburg is the municipal master school for stonemasons and stone sculptors, housed in the former royal stables opposite Johannisburg Palace in Aschaffenburg's old town. Its full-time course runs from mid-September to early August and prepares for parts I and II of the master craftsman's examination, held by the Chamber of Crafts for Lower Franconia; tuition is free. Teaching keeps traditional stone working alive, including splitting stone by hand, profiling and ornamentation, and transferring sculptors' models with the pointing machine or the three-compass method. Each class also makes a joint bronze piece and goes on study trips, usually to Rome and Strasbourg.
