In short
Studio Sem is a sculpture studio founded in the mid-1950s by Sem Ghelardini in Pietrasanta and now based in Camaiore, 4.5 km south of the town, where a team of artisans produces marble and granite sculpture for artists, from roughing out to the finished work, by hand and with robotics. Sem made a tradition of inviting young artists to work alongside his artisans and visiting masters, and the studio says its original artisans passed their knowledge on to the new generation of carvers who work there today, including direct enlargement with compasses and the manual pantograph. The studio encourages artists to take part in the process, teaching technique where needed, with the stated aim of keeping the craft of carving alive.
