In short
Tiwi Design is an Aboriginal art centre at Nguiu (today Wurrumiyanga) on Bathurst Island, 80 km north of Darwin; it began in 1968 when two young men worked with the local school's art teacher on wood-block prints, and moved to screen-printing textiles in 1969. Around 100 artists work with the centre in ochre painting, ironwood carving, screen-printed fabrics, ceramics, pandanus weaving and printmaking, in a complex with a carvers' shelter, a pottery studio, a screen-printing studio and a painting studio. The centre states that its aim is to promote, preserve and enrich Tiwi culture.
