In short
The Department of Crafts of Tokyo University of the Arts goes back to the art-crafts course of the Tokyo Fine Arts School, opened in 1889; the university itself traces its history to 1887 and took its present form in 1949. Undergraduates study in seven courses: metal carving, metal hammering, metal casting, urushi lacquer (with woodworking), ceramics (with glass), textile arts, and material arts in woodworking and glass. After a common first year, students train from the second year at the Ueno campus, with small-group teaching; material arts is based mainly at the Toride campus in Ibaraki, which also has large metal and lacquer workshops.
