In short

Toyama Institute of Glass Art (TIGA) opened in Toyama in 1991; it describes itself as Japan's first public educational institution for glass art. Its two-year glass course covers hot work (glassblowing), kiln work and cold work, followed by a research course in which students establish their own artistic identity; since its foundation it has had two foreign instructors on the staff, and it hosts workshops by visiting artists. The institute works alongside the Toyama Glass Studio and the Toyama Glass Art Museum within the city's glass policy, and has run an artist-in-residence programme since 2010.
