The Universidad del Arte Ganexa in Panama City, in the El Cangrejo area of Bella Vista, is a university devoted to the arts that grew out of the Academia de Bellas Artes Ganexa, formally started in 1980. Its School of Design offers a Licenciatura en Diseño de Modas (three years and eight months) that teaches fashion design, pattern making and sewing techniques in parallel, with textile design and technology and a final runway collection; the school says its fashion programme was founded in 1985 by the Dominican artist and designer Miguel Mella. The university also offers a degree in gastronomy, with pastry and bakery as a line of its own, and short courses that include fashion and pattern making, sculpture and ceramics, and cooking and pastry.
