In short
Urasenke Gakuen is a professional school in Kyoto for the study of chadō, the Way of Tea, of the Urasenke tradition, and describes itself as the only school of its kind in Japan directly attached to the Urasenke Grand Master (iemoto). Founded in 1962 as the Urasenke Chadō Training Institute, it took the name Urasenke Gakuen in 1971 and became an incorporated educational institution in 1983. It offers a three-year chadō course, a one-year course, a research course and a one-year training course for students from abroad; the curriculum combines the practice of tea procedures (temae) with lectures on tea history, tea rooms and gardens, tea utensils and crafts, kaiseki cuisine and sweets, hands-on sessions in Kyoto-ware painting, kintsugi and raku pottery, and visits to the workshops of the Senke Jusshoku craft families.
