In short
Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts was founded in 1949 from a branch of the Northwest People's Art College and took its present name in 1960; since 1994 it has been on Hanguang Road in Yanta District, Xi'an. Its Department of Arts and Crafts, set up in 1957, was the first design department of the academy and the earliest arts and crafts programme in northwest China. Its Fashion Department, established in 2001 on the basis of a textile and fashion programme begun in 1986, teaches fashion and apparel design with attention to the cultural traditions of western China.
